Prognosis and therapy of esophageal cancer is strongly related to the results of staging. Accurate staging is therefore essential. After initial endoscopic diagnosis with bioptic confirmation of the diagnosis, CT-scan of the chest and upper abdomen should be performed to assess the TNM-stage. In a potentially curable situation without detection of metastases, the TN-stage should be verified by endosonography. The local TN-stage which is decisive for complete local tumour resectability, can only be assessed with sufficient accuracy by endoscopic ultrasonography.
食管癌的预后和治疗与分期结果密切相关。因此，准确分期至关重要。在通过活检确诊进行初步内镜诊断后，应进行胸部和上腹部CT扫描以评估TNM分期。在未检测到转移的潜在可治愈情况下，应通过内镜超声检查来验证TN分期。对于决定肿瘤能否完全局部切除起决定性作用的局部TN分期，只有通过内镜超声检查才能足够准确地评估。
