Mouthrinses have traditionally been used for cosmetic purposes. Therapeutic products are now available, many of which are sold over the counter. Consumers rely on dental professionals for guidance in the selection of a mouthrinse. The various product categories are reviewed and criteria for patient and/or consumer selection are suggested.
