The morphological findings in a 4- to 5-month-old female fetus with Chiari's type III malformation are described. This observation strongly supports the view that a defective closure of the roof plate is the primary cause of this malformation, and relates it to the Arnold-Chiari and Dandy-Walker syndromes.
