The chromosomes of the Indian long-tailed tree mouse, Vandeleuria oleracea nilagirica, have been studied in both sexes and the diploid number established to be 2n = 28 with a simple XX/XY sex chromosome mechanism. The sex chromosome polymorphism encountered in different taxa is discussed in the light of the present findings.
