Structural molecules in the skin may serve as candidate proteins or target antigens in both inherited and acquired blistering skin diseases. Molecular characterization of the proteins and genes that encode them has led to an improved understanding of the mechanisms of blistering in the skin, and has also allowed the development of new approaches to diagnosis and treatment.
