The Royal Army Medical Corps came into existence on 1st July 1898, in response to dissatisfaction with the organisation and efficiency of the Army Medical Service. Although much of the pressure for change came from officers within the service, a significant factor was the campaign conducted by a civilian, Alexander Ogston, Professor of Surgery at Aberdeen.
