As one of the first "national" medical organizations, the first pharmacopeia contributed to a united national public health effort. The USP was the precursor to the American Medical Association. An official USP drug monograph tells manufacturers what constitutes the acceptable identity, quality, strength, and purity of a pharmaceutical product.
