To evaluate the clinical significance of systemic amyloidosis in the differential diagnosis of pleural effusion.
Retrospective analysis of the incidence and the characteristics of pleural effusion in systemic amyloidosis.
Seven (47%) of 15 cases of systemic amyloidosis were complicated with pleural effusion, of them 4 cases were confirmed by positive Congo red stain of percutaneous pleural biopsies specimens.
Systemic amyloidosis involving pleura was not rare. Pleural amyloidosis should be suspected in pleural effusion complicated by multiorgan disease. Percutaneous pleural biopsy with Congo red stain can confirm the diagnosis.
