Recent reviews on the genesis of cysts in the adult kidney lead to two major theories: mechanical and toxic. Obstruction indisputably plays a role in determining certain cysts in animals and examination in the human plus certain personal clinical data seems to confirm this. The role of chemical factors in the human has not yet been clearly established, although there is abundant evidence of its occurrence in animals.
