This notice updates the Medicare Economic Index (MEI), which is used to calculate the prevailing charge levels that help to determine reasonable charges for certain physician services under the Medicare Supplementary Medical Insurance (Part B) program. For physician services furnished on or after April 1, 1990, and before January 1, 1991 the increase for primary care services will be 4.2 percent, and for other services it will be 2.0 percent.
