A home away from home: extended care in pediatrics.

In 1982, the Winnipeg Children's Hospital initiated its Pediatric Extended Care Unit for children who require prolonged respiratory support. Since its creation, 34 children have stayed at the unit for periods ranging from a few months to nearly three years. Most have been successfully discharged to their natural or foster families to assume their place in the community.
