The issue of physician health has been highlighted recently by the public's concern about the possibility of contracting AIDS from an HIV-positive health care practitioner. This article examines some of the applicable standards on physician health issues, recent cases and incidents involving HIV-infected practitioners, the new CDC guidelines for preventing HIV transmission to patients, and the consequences to, and responsibilities of, the HIV-positive physician.
