Internally, when pharmacy managers have attempted to argue for the positive contribution of pharmacy on hospital and physician costs, they were generally unable to definitively prove the linkage between drug use and outcome. They were, however, able to demonstrate an ability to reduce the overall pharmacy program costs by applying a full array of cost-containment strategies to their internal executives as well as plan sponsor's benefit managers and consultants.
