Today, Physicians Health Services Inc. (PHS), headquartered in Trumbull, Conn., is one of the nation's largest, publicly-held IPA model HMOs. But in 1977, when it became operational, only four percent of Americans were covered under HMOs, and file cabinets and manual processes were the status quo in healthcare operations.
