During the past decade in Italy, delivery of long-term care has undergone many changes, with introduction of the nursing homes as the central force. High-quality residential and outpatient services have become available in new community-oriented services. Among the benefits are reduction of inappropriate admissions, improved quality of life for residents and outpatients, decreased dependence on private resources, growth of voluntary services, and creation of new occupational opportunities.
在过去十年里，意大利的长期护理服务发生了诸多变化，养老院成为核心力量。新的社区导向型服务提供了高质量的住院和门诊服务。其带来的好处包括减少不适当的入院情况、提高住院患者和门诊患者的生活质量、减少对私人资源的依赖、志愿服务的增加以及创造新的就业机会。
