Surface plasmon resonance is an optical technique that allows the study of surface phenomena in real time, without preliminary labelling. The technique is useful in biomaterial science to determine affinity constants, concentrations, kinetics, film thickness and dielectric properties of material surfaces. This article examines the technology and some of its applications.
