Consolidation of the medical staffs of merging hospitals must be considered separately from the corporate merger, and the organizational framework combining the staffs must be carefully planned. A participant of a recent merger outlines the mechanism through which two medical staffs established common principles of consolidation, separately enacted identical bylaws, developed a cross-credentialing procedure, and instituted a transitional organizational framework.
