The utility of theory is not restricted to the field of pathology and the "hard" sciences. It is, for example, a mistake to assume that "common sense" is all that is required for laboratory directors to successfully fulfill their management duties. Organizational theory offers a valuable perspective for pathologists as they contemplate the structure of the clinical laboratory and prepare for the future.
