An animal facility is designed to provide the appropriate environmental conditions for the well-being of laboratory animals used in biomedical research. The design also must provide for the comfort, health, and safety of animal care technicians, research personnel, and veterinary staff who work in the facility. This chapter describes the functional areas of an animal facility and the engineering controls designed into animal facilities for restricting hazards and minimizing occupational risks of illness and injury to personnel.
