The first gynecologic exam for adolescents can be a positive experience in which they learn about their own body, or it can be a traumatic event. For the practitioner who may not do frequent gynecologic exams it can also be anxiety producing. The exam begins with a complete patient history including menstrual history, sexual history, and contraceptive history. The physical exam includes examination of thyroid, heart, lungs, breasts, abdomen, and genitalia. The nurse's approach can provide the tools the adolescent needs to make it a positive experience.
