The 1995 AAGL survey of laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) in the United States was translated into Czech and sent to 146 clinics performing LAVH.
Of the 146 clinics, 34% responded with a total of 733 procedures for analysis. Compared with the United States, complication rates were similar except for two that were more frequent in the Czech Republic: conversion to laparotomy and return to the operating room because of bleeding. These complications should be reduced as more experience is gained.
It appears that LAVH is replacing abdominal hysterectomy more than vaginal hysterectomy, a trend that should mean less discomfort and shorter hospital stay for patients.
