Abstract
Normal and altered pathophysiology of the brain are discussed. Mechanisms of cerebral protection by induced hypothermia are outlined. Current research on induced hypothermia for brain injury is summarised. Nursing implications for the care of these patients are considered including ethical, monitoring and health and safety issues.
