The pathophysiology of rheumatic diseases is complex and lacks clear-cut origins. This article describes the current theories and supporting evidence for the pathogenesis, mechanisms, and progression of rheumatic diseases. The roles of genetic inheritance and inflammatory/immune mediators are emphasized.
