Studies carried out on ground squirrels showed active warming of these animals during arousal from hibernation to be closely connected with intensification of the shivering thermogenesis. The intraabdominal administration of 5-oxytryptophane, a precursor of serotonin clearly suppressed the shivering thermogenesis in arising ground squirrels and slowed down their warming.
