Double Thiry-Vella loops in calves were used to show that when heat stable E coli enterotoxin was in contact with only one of the loops, a net increase in water secretion occured in both. It was concluded that either enterotoxin itself or a mediator substance was absorbed and acted via the systemic circulation.
