An improved technique is described which yields up to 6,000 isolated islets of Langerhans from the pancreas of rats. The quotients for insulin/amylase and insulin/protein were estimated in vitro. For in vivo testing isologous transplantations of islets were performed. Several parameters such as total body-weight, blood sugar levels, insulin i.s., glucose-tolerance and glucose-assimilation tests demonstrated that the islets still retained their normal function despite the isolation procedure.
