To review the efficacy of stereotactic breast biopsies performed at the North Shore Hospital.
Out of 118 consecutive biopsies carried out between 1992 and 1998, performed on impalpable lesions found on routine mammography, 102 with adequate follow-up data were reviewed, with particular regard to the sensitivity and accuracy of the technique in the diagnosis of breast cancer. The techniques and equipment employed are described.
The results were comparable to those described in the literature, with a sensitivity of 88.9%, specificity of 97.6% and overall accuracy of 97.1%. The procedure was found to be well-tolerated by patients.
The method was found to be accurate, safe and inexpensive.
