Schwann cells are a key regulators of peripheral nerve development, being required for the survival of neurons, the distribution of ion channels along nerve fibers and formation of myelin sheath as well as stimulation of development of the connective tissue sheath. They develop from the neural crest and differentiate into myelin- and non-myelin-forming cells.
