The authors present an account of a large Meckel's diverticulum in a 17-year-old boy as the cause of chronic intermittent pain in the umbilical area, rare at this age, with development of acute inflammatory abdomen. During an emergency operation resection of the diverticulum was performed with 10 cm of the adjacent ileum and anastomosis of the ileum end-to-end. The patient recovered after surgery per primam intentionem and is free from complaints. The authors draw attention to the difficult preoperative diagnosis of this disease as well as to possible contemporary diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities.
