The hyperplastic and metaplastic changes of the endometrium most often coexist and are associated with hyperestrogenic status--exogenous hormones, hormoneproducing ovarian tumors, persisting anovylatory cycles, PCOS. The correct histologic diagnosis of metaplasia and the differential diagnosis with atypical hyperplasia and some types of endometrial carcinomas, especially in cases of pre-operative curettage specimen, are of greatest importance for the consecutive therapeutic approach.
