The rise of genetics in Bulgaria is connected with the work of M. Popoff from the Sofia University that was a center of Bulgarian studies into heredity and variation. M. Popoff's studies in Drosophila and D. Kostoff's research into Nicotiana were threatened by the conflict with Lysenkoist teaching on the inheritance of acquired characters.
