Learning disability nursing has always had an ambivalent relationship with the rest of the nursing profession. This article examines the origins of the discipline in the early part of the twentieth century and argues that its development was closely tied to changes in service provision, loose definitions of nursing work and the emerging speciality of mental deficiency within psychiatry.
