In my experience, the small analytic group is well suited to treat the social, cultural and historic components of personality. If the group contains different cultural bases, these can become discernible and open to verbal expression, scrutiny and change. Its size and the availability of the group analyst provide the environmental stability for the necessary trust to develop. Finally, I locate the basic communality at the core of human beings as deriving from the common early needs of the infant-mother relationship, which, though differently expressed, is the same for us all.
