The history of application of psychoanalysis in groups in Frankfurt a. M., which was closely connected to the establishment of the Sigmund-Freud-Institut is described from the author's point of view. Group work was begun with Balint groups for doctors. Later, it continued with teachers and theologists. Interest in group processes and the demands on a polyclinic to provide a wide array of psychoanalytic psychotherapies lead to the development of a form of psychoanalytic group therapy which was called group analysis. The change to the university, with the task of teaching psychoanalysis to students, led to new concepts of the application of psychoanalysis to groups in the form of therapy and supervision groups. These experiences culminated in a model of "counseling under supervision" in which students could experience the efficacy of a psychoanalytic method of counseling which they practiced themselves under supervision.
