In the French colonies of the Antilles, where society was greatly restricted due to the institution of slavery, it was found necessary to adapt civil legislation concerning the healing arts. Following the naval pharmacists, the naval pharmacists, pharmacists "of color" were allowed to establish themselves at the end of the 19th century, and pharmacy became a profession both uniformly regulated and recognized as a means of social advancement.
