A diuretic effect is demonstrated following oral administration of 0.25 mg 3-n-butylamino-4-phenoxy-5-sulfamoylbenzoic acid (bumetanide, Burinex-R), the maximum response apparently not being reached by a dose of 0.5 mg. Within this range the dose-response curve is steep and approximately linear. The pattern of urinary volume and electrolyte excretion bears close resemblance to the "high-ceiling" diuretics known so far. Bumetanide differs from them by a markedly increased potency compared on the basis of molar dosage.
