Three widely different fringe organisations outside the National Health Service working on the treatment of drug dependence are described.The immense problems facing one organisation dealing with barbiturate addiction are emphasised, with hope for more widespread recognition of this addiction by general practitioners combined with more strenuous efforts by medical politicians to reduce the sources of supply.
