The purpose of this study was to assess the functional state of the liver as well as the acid-base and electrolyte equilibrium during the first 24-hours after operation. Tne kinds of inhalational anaesthesia were applied in 170 patients evaluating the usefulness of routine tests for observation of side effects of anaesthesia. Significant early changes were observed in liver function following halothane anaesthesia, particularly when the patients received other inhalational anaesthetics together with halothane. Determinations of the activity of aminotransferases, aldolase, diastase and bilirubin are useful in the evaluation of early side effects of agents used in general anaesthesia.
