Otolaryngologists are increasingly being called on to assist with the evaluation and management of skull base defects that result in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and meningoencephaloceles. A thorough understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and a critical analysis of management principles and treatment options are essential to achieve the best possible results for these patients. This review article highlights the physiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, surgical technique, and postoperative care relevant to CSF leak and encephalocele patient care for otolaryngologists with a special emphasis on the differences between CSF leaks of varying etiologies.
