This paper presents a case study of a birth in a midwife-led unit. Swanson's theory of caring is utilised for the plan of care and its applicability to the care provided in the unit is discussed. Details of the woman's history, assessment, goals/needs and detail of the care planned and provided are given, along with an analysis of the extent to which the ways of knowing described by Carper can be identified in the process of midwifery care. This provides a postscript of the interplay between science and art in the midwifery care provided.
