A candidate for the male sex determining gene 2 has recently been isolated. This gene, named SRY, has an expression profile consistent with a role in testis determination, is mutated in some XY females, and causes female to male sex reversal in transgenic mice. The cloning of this gene should facilitate the characterization of other genes in the testis determining pathway.
