Care of individual clients has been the traditional focus of health care and therefore nursing education. Recently, the family as a unit of care has received more attention. This study provides a current and accurate description of family nursing content, summarizing the major concepts, definitions, course titles, textbooks, and assessment instruments used in teaching family nursing in baccalaureate and graduate programs. The findings identify trends in family nursing education that will provide direction to educators and clinicians planning to strengthen family nursing in their curricula.
