We are facing a crisis in nursing not unlike that faced by our foremothers and forefathers: a shortage of nurses that promises to get worse before it gets better. Attrition contributes to this shortage as does competition from other professions. Empowering our graduates is one solution to the crisis. Empowerment will enable us to retain persons in the profession as well as to attract new members. Providing graduates with a sense of the caring and scholarly heritage of the profession is part of that empowerment.
