Estimations of red cell and blood volumes using (51)Cr were carried out on a group of 37 people over the age of 70 who were not anaemic. Subjects with clinical conditions known to affect red cell production were excluded. The mean values for red cell and blood volumes were found to be comparable with those of a control group of young adults. Seven people had red cell volumes below the accepted range in young adults but no reason was found for this difference. Red cell survival was determined concurrently on 11 of the group and did not differ from those of young controls.
对一组37名70岁以上且无贫血的人群进行了使用（51）铬的红细胞和血容量估算。排除了已知会影响红细胞生成的临床疾病患者。发现红细胞和血容量的平均值与一组年轻成年人对照组的平均值相当。7人的红细胞容量低于年轻成年人的公认范围，但未发现造成这种差异的原因。同时对该组中的11人测定了红细胞生存期，其与年轻对照组的生存期无差异。
