A single cotton ligature closed the common bile duct, the hepatic artery, and the hepatic portal vein. The continuity of the bile duct was restored in 14 of 69 cases, the restoration process being associated with mitosis in the bile duct epithelium. There was evidence that the continuity of the blood vessels was also restored.
