Rhinorrhea after neurotologic surgery may be indicative of a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak or may be secondary to autonomic dysfunction as a result of injury to preganglionic parasympathetic fibers. Differentiation between these two conditions is essential because undetected CSF rhinorrhea may lead to meningitis and death.
