Mediastinal exploration in the surgical intensive care unit.

A continuing education program was developed after a need was identified within the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) for critical care nurses to be able to assist the cardiothoracic surgeon in performing an emergent mediastinal reexploration in the postcardiac surgical patient when an operating room team was unavailable. The program is targeted for SICU nurses experienced in caring for these patients.
