Sunlight is required for life on Earth. Nevertheless it may also be hazardous and can lead to the development of skin cancer and photosensitivity diseases. After a short summary of current knowledge of photocarcinogenesis, the article emphasizes the role of topical sunscreens, their mode of action and potential side effects. The current recommendations for photoprotection for the general public are outlined.
