The goal of this research was to determine the relationship between high levels of calcium in Majorca's water supplies and the prevalence of fractures in schoolchildren. The study was performed during two school terms and was done within the framework of the School Health System. Three towns of Majorca were selected because of the different content of calcium in their water supply. The fluorine content in the tap water was always under 0.5 mg/l. All of the towns have the same social and economic backgrounds. We surveyed 1,308 schoolchildren, between 11 and 14 years of age, about previous fractures. There is a statistically significant relationship between fractures and low calcium levels in the water supply. This association is stronger for children 11 years of age than for children 14 years old.
