This article summarizes the recent literature on pregnancy after perinatal loss and suggests nursing practice strategies that can be used to assist parents experiencing such a pregnancy. It discusses problems with current theories, models of grief and mourning, and some common myths and applies Peretz's model of types of loss to a pregnancy loss. It describes, too, factors that influence parental response to grief and attachment and nursing interventions that may be appropriate when providing care during a pregnancy that follows perinatal loss.
